Long garden / St Philips Road

After a stylish rear extension on their terraced house these clients needed a total redesign for their long and narrow town garden. Being keen growers themselves, we split the space into two at the site of an existing cherry tree, with a curved lawn and herbaceous beds filled - as requested - with ‘frothy stuff, to give a natural look’. By using plants with strong winter seedheads and silhouettes against a backbone of clipped yew and other evergreens, the garden provides plenty of habitat together with year-round visual presence. In the rear half of the garden, partially screened off by ferns and other planting, there is ample space for home-grown veg in a series of ergonomic raised beds. The use of sleepers for a ‘modern rustic’ bench echoes the materials from the raised beds. Black limestone stepping stones in the lawn connect the terrace with the rest of the garden and provide continuity with the house extension.
